Relaunched New York Cosmos Announce First Signing Guenzatti
John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Cosmos are bringing back a familiar face as part of the famed club's 2026 relaunch.

On Friday, the Cosmos announced the signing of forward Sebastian Guenzatti on a multi-year contract. Guenzatti is the Cosmos' first signing since the club went inactive in 2020.

"Rejoining the Cosmos means so much to me," Guenzatti said in a statement. "This club shaped my career. We’ve had so many unbelievable moments wearing this badge. Coming back feels like coming back home, and I’m so happy and excited to be part of this new era. The Cosmos badge — it’s a heavy badge, so you have to create a winning mentality. I’m a little more experienced now, so hopefully I can bring that as well, and set a foundation for the new era.”

Guenzatti's signing is pending league and federation approval. The Cosmos will begin play in USL League One in 2026 at Paterson, New Jersey's Hinchliffe Stadium in Mar. 2026.

The 34-year-old returns to the Cosmos after previously helping the club to three NASL championships. He spent last season with USL Championship side Detroit City FC.

Though he was born in Uruguay, he moved to the United States at age 12. He was raised in College Point, Queens.

Guenzatti scored 12 goals in 95 appearances during his previous stint with the Cosmos.

The Cosmos featured legendary players like Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia during their 1971-85 heyday.
