Tottenham need to address a lot of problems on the pitch before next season starts. The Lilywhites endured a disastrous Premier League campaign last season, finishing just a place above the relegation zone. The North London club also registered 22 losses along the way, and failed to reach the 40-point mark in the league. Ange’s men survived a relegation scare as the teams below them were just not good enough.
The disastrous domestic campaign that the club endured was due to the injury crisis at N17. Many key defenders were sidelined through long-term injuries midway through the season, and that forced Ange Postecoglou to play inexperienced players at the back. The lack of squad depth was also clear to see as the Lilywhites failed to replace the injured defenders.
Key centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven struggled to stay fit for most parts of the campaign. Whereas, backup defender Radu Dragusin also ruptured his ACL earlier this year to make matters worse. Not only that, but January signing Kevin Danso was also forced to sit on the side-lines for two months immediately after joining the club.
There is no surprise that Tottenham are aiming to sign a new centre-back in the summer. Key defender Cristian Romero is facing an uncertain future at N17 and it believed that the Argentine might head for pastures new in the coming weeks. So, the Lilywhites need to bring in a quality replacement for next season as they look to strengthen the quality of the defence under Thomas Frank.
It was reported earlier that Spurs were interested in signing Jorrel Hato from Ajax in the summer. The Lilywhites have been long-term admirers of the talented youngster and view him as the perfect player to play alongside Micky van de Ven. However, Ben Jacobs has now suggested that the North London club faces competition from other top clubs for the teenager’s signature. Speaking to Spurs Web, Jacobs said,
“I sense Tottenham might go for a centre-back who is also comfortable at full-back, even though Djed Spence has really reignited his Spurs career. That could allow Archie Gray to move into midfield. And left-sided defensive cover may also be considered. Ajax’s Jorrel Hato is one name of interest, and Tottenham face competition with both Arsenal and Chelsea.”
Ben Jacobs has suggested that Tottenham will look to sign a versatile defender that could play as a centre-back or as a left-back. The journalist also adds that signing a versatile defender will allow Archie Gray to play in his natural position. Jacobs insists that Ajax defender Jorrel Hato is on the club’s radar, but the Lilywhites face competition from Arsenal and Chelsea for his services.
Signing Jorrel Hato will be a step in the right direction for Tottenham. Thomas Frank prefers to play a back three in most games, and more often than not, the left-sided centre-back slots in as a make-shift left-back during build-up play. This is where Jorrel Hato will thrive as he can play both positions comfortably. His massive potential is also something to look at and signing for the Lilywhites will guarantee him regular game time.
