Rene Hake previously worked alongside Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, but the Dutch coach has now made a significant decision concerning his managerial future.

Hake arrived at Old Trafford in July 2024 alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, with United restructuring their coaching staff following Ten Hag’s FA Cup triumph.

The former Go Ahead Eagles manager brought extensive tactical experience, having guided the Dutch club to ninth place in the Eredivisie, their highest finish since the 1970s.

However, his United career proved remarkably short.

Ten Hag was dismissed in October 2024, with Hake departing weeks later when Ruben Amorim introduced his own coaching staff.

Almost two years later, United find themselves confronting another managerial crisis.

Michael Carrick initially transformed the club’s fortunes after replacing Amorim in January, collecting 39 points from 17 Premier League matches and securing third place.

However, United have won just two of their opening 12 competitive fixtures this season.

A humiliating 4-1 defeat against Como was followed by Sunday’s 3-0 loss against Bournemouth, extending their winless run to eight matches.

Many expected Carrick’s dismissal on Monday, but the club have decided to give him more time, with Saturday’s trip to Chelsea looming.

Nevertheless, United have explored potential replacements, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.

Meanwhile, Hake has rejected an opportunity to return to management.

Rene Hake turns down managerial offer

According to Dutch regional broadcaster RTV Oost, Hake has rejected the opportunity to become PEC Zwolle’s new head coach.

The 54-year-old held discussions with technical director Gerry Hamstra before deciding against accepting the vacancy.

Zwolle dismissed Henry van der Vegt following disastrous results and a lack of development, leaving assistants Dennis van der Ree and Maikel van der Werff temporarily responsible.

Hake knows the club well, having previously served as assistant manager between 2012 and 2015.

His managerial experience includes FC Twente, Cambuur, Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles, while he most recently assisted Robin van Persie at Feyenoord.

Centre Devils reported Zwolle’s approach on 14 October, although his intentions were unclear at the time.

He has now rejected the opportunity, leaving the Dutch club searching for another appointment.
