Pirlo was named the club's Under-23 head coach last month, but has since secured a major promotion without even managing a single match for the U-23's.
The 41-year-old previously played for Juventus from 2011-2015 and won four Serie A titles and one Italian Cup. Pirlo played a key role for Italy during the side's 2006 World Cup title. He also won two Champions Leagues and two league titles with AC Milan during his playing career.
His hiring by Juventus comes after the club fired Sarri following their Champions League elimination.
Sarri led the club to their ninth consecutive Serie A title, though their performance during the end of the season landed them with just 83 points, their lowest total since the 2011-12 season. Juventus suffered five losses and two draws against three wins since July 4.
Sarri's club also disappointed in the cup with defeats in the Coppa Italia final on penalties to Napoli and the Suppercoppa Italia to Lazio 3-1.
