Tottenham fans have been through the mill somewhat under Ange Postecoglou, with the club flip-flopping from a 5th place finish in season one to seventeenth in season two. This doesn’t include the glory of lifting the first trophy in 17 years, and the living nightmare of losing a club and Premier League record of 22 games, last term.
After achieving such heights in Bilbao and securing Champions League qualification, the decision regarding whether to keep Ange on or let the Australian leave on a high has become more complicated.
Postecoglou has strong support from fans and players, particularly after the Europa League win. Fans chanted his name during and after the final game, and players like Cristian Romero, whose future may be tied to Postecoglou’s, backed him. The gaffer has expressed a desire to stay, emphasising at the recent trophy parade that, “Season three is always better than season two”
Another player who has stuck by Ange, despite not having had the kind of impact that anyone would have wished during his loan spell at N17, is Mathys Tel. However, the boy would be keen to make the stay a permanent one, according to a report from Football Insider.
The figure that Spurs might wish to play for needs to be renegotiated with a discounted deal with Bayern Munich, and the less-than-desired performances could be said to have been more about the chaos of injuries that surrounded the side for much of the last campaign.
The situation around Tel is much like the rest of the club right now. There is as much confusion as there is joy. Club scouts, Ange and his coaching staff will all have seen plenty of the lad and know whether there is Premier League potential there.
Spurs fans want a player who will work with the system in place and reward their support. If Daniel Levy can get an agreeable deal over the line, then why ever not?
Enough with the club flip-flopping!
