Weston McKennie could start for Juventus in next Saturday’s Serie A Derby d’Italia match against Inter Milan.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that it will be between McKennie and Filip Kostic to start on the left flank for the Bianconeri.
Juventus will host Inter Milan in the first Derby d’Italia of the season next weekend.
Clashes between the Bianconeri and the Nerazzurri are always among the biggest on the Italian football calendar.
And next Saturday’s match will be a hugely important test for both Inter coach Cristian Chivu and his Juventus counterpart Igor Tudor.
For Tudor, the Gazzetta dello Sport report, there is one position in particular where doubt remains.
According to the Gazzetta, Tudor is still mulling over who will start on the left flank of his 3-4-2-1 formation.
The key concern, the newspaper anticipate, will be stopping Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries. The Dutchman is one of Inter’s main attacking outlets.
Filip Kostic could start at left-wingback, reports the Gazzetta.
The Serb is left-footed. And he is certainly used to bombing up and down the flank.
However, the versatile McKennie could also be a candidate.
Unlike Kostic, the former Schalke midfielder has not been on international duty with the United States during the break.
Therefore, Tudor has had the chance to work closely with McKennie in training during the break.
Furthermore, whilst McKennie is not exactly a natural wingback, he certainly has the athleticism and stamina to keep up with Dumfries.
Therefore, the Gazzetta report, McKennie could play from the start next Saturday.
