Lazio have agreed a new contract with Matias Vecino until 2026 with an option to extend for another year, claim Sky Sport Italia.

The intention to keep hold of the veteran had been known and negotiations have progressed to reach a deal.

According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Vecino will sign a new contract with the expiry of June 2026.

It includes an option to extend for a further year after that.

Lazio committed to Vecino

Vecino was going to become a free agent at the end of this month and will turn 34 in August.

He had been linked with Benfica, Real Betis and a different Serie A experience with Como, but he decided to continue at the Stadio Olimpico.

The midfielder joined Lazio in the summer of 2022 as a free agent from Inter.

A Uruguay international, Vecino spent most of his career in Serie A for Fiorentina, Cagliari, Empoli, Inter and Lazio.

This season, he made 29 competitive appearances for the Biancocelesti, contributing two goals and five assists.

It comes after Pedro officially extended his contract with Lazio, having been in a similar situation with a deal running down.
