Manchester United fans would have hoped for a bright start to the 2025/26 season under Ruben Amorim. However, they have faced a harsh reality in the very first few weeks of the season. The club is currently 14th in the Premier League points table, having won just one game. This is also the worst start to a league for Manchester United in 33 years.
The board backed Amorim with signings in the summer transfer window, and he also took over the role in November 2024. However, things have not improved, and there are significant doubts about his rigid 3-4-2-1 system. The 40-year-old has also not used Kobbie Mainoo much, and reports reveal that the United players are surprised that the manager is not trusting the 20-year-old midfielder. All these scenarios have intensified the pressure on Amorim, and lingering doubts persist about his long-term future.
Amidst all these tensions surrounding Amorim and the club, journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on his YouTube channel that Sir Jim Ratcliffe flew to Carrington and had discussions on the current scenario. Meanwhile, Manchester United sources reveal that the club had planned the meetings long before the 3-0 loss against Manchester City in the League, but the current timing and situation have increased the significance of the meeting.
The United owner talked to the club management and also had a face-to-face meeting with his Amorim. He asked him about the reason behind the poor performances despite a significant investment in the squad in the summer. However, Romano revealed that the club has still not approached any new manager to replace Amorim, and continues to back the Portuguese. However, the manager has to produce results now. The owners will be patient only if the management makes the desired changes and produces the desired results now.
“What Sir Jim Ratcliffe did today in the last few hours was fly into Carrington. Sir Jim Ratcliffe arrived and had several meetings. Manchester United made it very clear that those meetings were planned. All of those meetings were with people in management, with people from staff, and all those kinds of meetings were already planned, even before the Manchester derby loss of 3-0 by Manchester City.
“But in those meetings, there was also a conversation – a direct face-to-face conversation – with Ruben Amorim. Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to be involved, as I mentioned. Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to understand what’s going on after spending important money in the summer, after backing the manager, and to understand why Manchester United are not performing.
“What I can guarantee is that this week, Manchester United have not advanced with any manager available to start conversations, or to go and get an agreement ready for the future. United have not prepared anything; they keep trusting Ruben Amorim. But different results are needed.”
At the same time, reports say that Casemiro will depart United when his contract expires next summer, which only heightens the urgency for Amorim to strengthen midfield organisation.
Now, Amorim has to shrug off his rigid and predictable 3-4-2-1 system. The system is not working for him and his team. If the Portuguese wants to continue in his post, then he has to show the daring to step away from his comfort zone and try out some new formation which can bring better results from his players.
If he switches to 4-3-3, then Bruno Fernandes will get more freedom to go forward, and United can also play Kobbie Mainoo alongside him. Meanwhile, if Amorim uses a 4-2-3-1 formation, then it will provide him with better stability in the midfield. Without a compact structure, the former Sporting CP boos will find it hard to produce results in the upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, the board might back the manager until the Jnauary transfer window, and will allow him time to iron out the chinks in the armoury. However, if United still continue to perform poorly and lose the upcoming three matches, then the board will definitely run out of patience and will have to take an urgent call.
Football at this level punishes stubbornness, and Amorim cannot afford to ignore the evidence. His philosophy might have worked elsewhere, but unless he adapts to the squad in front of him, the relationship will end in disappointment. The pressure is immense, yet the answer lies in flexibility and trust in players who can bring balance. If those lessons are absorbed quickly, there is still hope of salvaging the season before it slips further away.
