Lazio had a difficult summer, with a transfer embargo enforced on the club, but reports from Italy claim the Biancocelesti have a plan in place to return to the market in January.

As of June 2025, Lazio had posted losses of €17.1 million, negative equity of €16.8 million and debt totalling €66.3 million. All of this combined led to the ban on the Roman side signing any players in the summer, outside of those they were already obligated to purchase from loan deals the season prior.

Now, according to reports from the Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb , Lazio president Claudio Lotito has a plan in place to allow the club to strengthen in the winter transfer window.

How Lazio plan to operate in January, and what positions might they sign?

The Corriere note how the side posted record profits in 2024 and Lotito wants to get the club back on track, without giving up on signing new players to strengthen head coach Maurizio Sarri’s squad.

In the summer, the Biancocelesti failed to offload some deadwood but did manage to sell some players, such as Tchaouna and Casale, which added around €7 million to the coffers so far, with a salary saving of €2.5 million.

The reports claim that a pivotal moment will come at the end of November, when Covisoc (Commissione di Vigilanza sulle Società di Calcio Professionistiche), the supervisory committee for football in Italy, will reach a verdict to establish whether or not Lazio can operate freely in January, or only on a zero-balance basis.

If Lazio are able to sign players, the first priority will reportedly be at least one midfielder (including a mezzala to fit Sarri’s system). Additionally, the club may look to sign a new right-winger if Cancellieri departs and a potential backup for Provide if the Biancocelesti part ways with Mandas.

The newspaper conclude with two possible solutions to help strengthen the squad. Either Lazio sell players like Mandas and Gigot to fund new signings, or return to their tried-and-tested formula of loans with option/obligation to buy.
