Inter Milan lost the race to sign Koni De Winter to AC Milan due to the lack of sales in defense.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Koni De Winter has been a major target for Inter Milan for months.

Reportedly, the Nerazzurri had lined up the 23-year-old as their top choice to replace either Benjamin Pavard or Yann Bisseck this summer.

However, Inter have missed out on De Winter’s signature. And it was their city rivals AC Milan who quickly snapped him up this summer.

Inter Lost Out On De Winter To AC Milan Due To Lack Of Sales

Had Inter sold either Pavard or Bisseck, then they would have moved quickly to sign De Winter.

However, both of those two defenders have thus far remained at Inter. They have reportedly rejected bids from the Premier League for Bisseck, wanting at least €40 million for the German’s signature.

On the other hand, Milan sold defender Malick Thiaw to Newcastle United in a big money deal.

Therefore, the Rossoneri had both the need to sign a defender, and the funds to invest.

Accordingly, Milan worked very quickly to sign De Winter when the opportunity arose.
