Robert Sanchez found himself on the bench as Chelsea cruised to a 4-1 win over Aston Villa, with Filip Jorgensen stepping in as his replacement. But according to Liam Rosenior, Sanchez has handled the situation like a true professional.
Competition for the goalkeeper position is normal at this level, but Sanchez’s recent omission followed an error he made in the match against Arsenal.
One of the most challenging things about him is how he can look unbeatable one week, pulling off big saves, then turn around and cost his team points with a poor pass or a bad decision.
Liam Rosenior says Robert Sanchez took the decision in stride, showing no signs of frustration.
Speaking to Football.London, Rosenior shared his thoughts on how Sanchez handled the situation.
“I already have done. I’ve been really honest with Rob, he was disappointed not to play the game but the way he responded was magnificent. There was no difference in him.”
Sanchez remains an important part of this squad, and his reaction only strengthens his case for future opportunities.
Liam Rosenior has also addressed the ongoing goalkeeper situation at Chelsea, discussing how he plans to decide between Sanchez and Jorgensen going forward.
“For me, genuinely, I look at the goalkeeper position maybe differently. Traditionally, if there’s a change of goalkeeper, people think he’s now No.1 but that’s not the case.”
Jorgensen has earned another start after his performance against Aston Villa, so it makes sense for him to keep his place against Wrexham.
However, the timing of Rosenior’s comments does line up with a mistake from Sanchez, which raises questions about whether this is just an explanation for dropping him.
