Romania head coach Mircea Lucescu waxed lyrical about Inter Milan and their new manager Cristian Chivu in his latest interview.
Speaking to La Repubblica via FCInterNews, the 80-year-old praised Inter’s playing style under his compatriot.
Cristian Chivu replaced Simone Inzaghi in the dugout in June, returning to San Siro in a different capacity.
Despite lacking experience in senior management, the club chose the 44-year-old to engineer a new era.
After a slow start to life at Giuseppe Meazza, Chivu has turned Inter’s fortunes around.
Indeed, he has led his side to seven consecutive wins in all competitions, including a 4-0 rout of Royale Union SG on Tuesday.
Furthermore, the Nerazzurri have established themselves as early title contenders in Serie A.
Only a point separates them from pacesetters AC Milan heading into Saturday’s mouth-watering clash against Napoli.
Therefore, Chivu looks set to continue steering the 20-time Italian champions toward a strong Scudetto challenge.
Lucescu was in Chivu’s shoes. Indeed, he coached Inter Milan in the 1998/99 season.
Therefore, he understands the challenges that come with the job, which makes him uniquely qualified to speak about the Nerazzurri boss.
“I watch Chivu’s Inter, which is doing very well,” he said. “And their results are very important internationally for all of Italian football.
Meanwhile, Lucescu launched Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s career at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Indeed, he introduced the Armenian veteran to senior football at Donbas Arena. And the rest is history.
Mkhitaryan has since become one of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders.
Before joining Inter in 2022, he played for Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, and Roma.
The 36-year-old is now one of Inter’s most influential stars, even though he has set one foot in the retirement room.
“And I always follow my protégé Mkhitaryan, whom I launched at Shakhtar Donetsk,” Lucescu stated.
“I still speak to him often,” he concluded.
