Celtic seems to be on the verge of signing out-of-contract Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan on a free transfer. And whilst that first summer signing might be something of a surprise to some it actually makes perfect sense. Let me explain…

Scott Bain will be leaving Celtic after a seven year spell at the club and he’s served us well. However he’s been our third choice goalkeeper and with one year left on his current deal he must have his eye on a move elsewhere hence the signing of Doohan. Celtic giving Scott a free is a decent gesture towards a good and unassuming servant for the club.

Scott Bain knows where he stands at Celtic and has been happy enough to be the second choice back-up keeper. But having done that for a number of years he now wants game-time and will undoubtedly have a move in the pipeline. He has an excellent relationship with the manager, coaching staff and his teammates and you saw the bond between him and our captain Callum McGregor after the final whistle at Hampden on Sunday.

Ross Doohan, who was part of the Dons squad which denied Celtic a treble on Saturday, has packed in a wealth of experience in his short career so far and was of course on the books of Celtic for many years so he knows the club and the expectations expected.

At 27 he still has the best years of his career ahead and although he won’t play regularly and his first team chances will be limited at best, he’s a dependable and reliable figure to fill in as back up to both VilJami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel.

With Kasper Schmeichel probably only having another season left at Celtic, the new wave of Celtic goalkeepers could be in place with Sinisalo and Doohan.

Ross is also Scottish and fits the home grown quota with Celtic losing Scott Bain form that list, so all in all it’s a strategically shrewd piece of business from Brendan Rodgers.
