There is more bad news for Lazio and Italy, with reports Nicolò Rovella could require surgery to resolve a recurring groin injury.
The midfielder had pulled out of international duty earlier this month with the same issue, then limped off during the first half of the 1-0 defeat to Roma in Serie A on Sunday.
According to Sky Sport Italia and Il Messaggero newspaper, the Lazio medical staff are ready to suggest surgery as the only way to resolve this problem once and for all.
It is believed to be a similar condition to the one that his Lazio and Italy teammate Mattia Zaccagni was struggling with last season.
When Zaccagni went under the knife, he was out for over a month, whereas that might be tricky for a Lazio side that cannot buy any new players due to the transfer embargo.
A potential solution to that impasse could be removing Rovella from the Serie A squad list and bringing back Toma Basic, who was excluded and put on the market without finding a suitable club.
Failing that, then Rovella will have to continue playing with the aid of pain-killing injections.
