Roy Keane reveals details of conversation with Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes enjoyed one of the finest individual campaigns of his career last season as Michael Carrick guided the club back into the Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder was at the heart of everything good the Red Devils produced, collecting multiple individual awards while leading the side to a third-place finish in the Premier League.

Bruno Fernandes also made history by breaking the Premier League’s single-season assist record, surpassing the previous mark of 20 shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Yet one of the biggest talking points surrounding his record-breaking season came away from the pitch after comments made by former United captain Roy Keane sparked an unexpected disagreement.

The controversy began after Keane discussed Fernandes’ pursuit of the assist record on an episode of The Overlap, claiming the midfielder had suggested he chose to pass rather than shoot in order to chase the milestone.

However, Fernandes later challenged that version of events during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast, insisting his comments had been misrepresented and describing Keane’s claim as a lie.

The United skipper admitted he was frustrated enough by the situation that he asked former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Keane’s phone number so the pair could discuss the matter directly.

At the time, it appeared the disagreement was only growing.

Shortly after clips of Fernandes’ interview circulated online, Keane uploaded a cryptic message to his Instagram story.

The image showed a donkey standing in front of two lions alongside the caption: “Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion.”

Many supporters interpreted the post as a response to Fernandes, adding further fuel to the discussion between the two Manchester United figures.

But the situation has now taken a very different turn.

Roy Keane reveals conversation with Bruno Fernandes

Speaking on the latest edition of Stick to Football on YouTube, Roy Keane revealed that Fernandes reached out personally and the pair eventually settled the matter through a private conversation.

“I think there was a reaction to what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat.

“I did, I called him and we had a lovely chat about a bit of everything really.”

The former United captain explained that misunderstandings can easily arise when comments are made during media appearances and podcasts.

“It was nice, when we do podcasts or games and sometimes you think you say something afterward and you are trying to communicate something and it doesn’t come across properly and people get upset.

“He wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation.”

Keane also joked that the issue had now been fully resolved.

“He apologised, I forgave him, no problem.”

While laughing about the situation, Keane made it clear that he appreciated Fernandes taking the initiative to contact him directly.

“I like having boundaries with players. I don’t want to be speaking to players every few weeks or their agents, I don’t want to go down that road, but every now and then a player might reach out, so it was important I spoke to him.

“There has been lots going on and lots reported.

“He’s obviously a big player for United, I’m an ex-United player and the idea of this communicating and having a proper conversation, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully he did as well.

“Nice chat about a bit of everything and I felt better afterwards.”

The exchange brings an end to what briefly looked like an awkward dispute between two of Manchester United’s most influential captains from different generations.

With the misunderstanding now cleared up, the focus can return to Fernandes’ remarkable season, one that saw him rewrite the Premier League record books and further strengthen his status as one of the most important players at Old Trafford.
