Ruben Amorim has kind words for Manchester United star Mason Mount following Brentford cameo

Manchester United’s Premier League woes continued as they fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Brentford, just days before their crucial second-leg Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao. The loss further highlights the urgent need for a squad overhaul at the end of the season, with the club appearing increasingly desperate for a summer rebuild.

United’s focus was clearly fixed on the upcoming European fixture, as they found themselves 4-1 down before mounting a late fightback. Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo offered a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point from the encounter.

One bright spot in the game was Mason Mount, who finally found the net and earned high praise from manager Ruben Amorim via The Metro. Speaking after the match, Amorim described Mount as more than just a midfielder, highlighting his intelligent movement into the box and sharp positional awareness. The United boss also praised Mount’s relentless work ethic in training, joking that he sometimes has to force the England international off the pitch. Amorim added that Mount is eager for more minutes, and the coaching staff are keen to manage him carefully, knowing the impact he can make when fully fit.

“He’s like a third midfielder that can reach the box. He’s really intelligent, he’s getting there. He trains really hard. Sometimes I have to push him back and take him out of the pitch because he wants to do so much more,’ the Portuguese added. We are taking care of him, he wants to play more minutes but I’m really happy with him.”

Amorim’s praise for Mason Mount offers a glimpse into why the manager remains optimistic about the midfielder’s future at Old Trafford. By describing Mount as a “third midfielder that can reach the box” and highlighting his intelligence and relentless work ethic, Amorim makes it clear that Mount’s value goes beyond what the stats currently show. The revelation that the manager sometimes has to physically pull him out of training speaks volumes about Mount’s attitude and desire to improve. It’s this kind of commitment that could eventually turn things around for the 25-year-old, especially as United continue to look for players who align with Amorim’s high-intensity, system-driven style.

Mount’s time at Manchester United hasn’t unfolded as hoped. Following his £55 million move from Chelsea, injuries and inconsistent form have made it difficult for him to settle and replicate the attacking spark he once displayed at Stamford Bridge. With just one goal and one assist in 20 Premier League appearances last season, his impact has been underwhelming. Ongoing fitness issues and a struggle to fit seamlessly into the system have contributed to a frustrating first chapter at Old Trafford.

This season hasn’t been much brighter statistically. Mount has scored just once in 14 Premier League appearances so far in the 2024/25 campaign, averaging 0.21 goals per 90 minutes. His total goal contributions remain at one, with a goal involvement rate of 0.21 per 90. Additionally, his non-penalty expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes stands at 0.15—numbers that underline his limited influence in the final third.
