Manchester United are currently searching for answers after a flat and uninspiring 1-1 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford, a result that has left fans questioning the team’s upward trajectory.
Under his watch, the club has brought in the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Patrick Dorgu, yet the team has struggled to find a cohesive rhythm despite these high-profile additions.
This lack of progress has led to significant backlash from supporters and pundits alike, with many criticising Amorim’s rigid adherence to his tactical setup and his perceived inability to get the best out of the talent at his disposal.
The pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach to prove that his philosophy can work in the Premier League, especially as he prepares his side for the high-intensity atmosphere of Elland Road.
Amid this growing criticism of his tactics, Amorim has suggested he cannot produce his preferred style of play at Manchester United because he cannot sign the right players.
According to the Metro, Ruben Amorim has hinted that his tactical vision for Manchester United is being stifled by an inability to recruit the specific profiles required for his system.
However, he remained tight-lipped when asked to elaborate.
Since taking the reins at Old Trafford, the Portuguese coach has attempted to implement his trademark 3-4-3 formation, but a string of underwhelming results has forced a rethink.
He now appears convinced that a departure from this blueprint is necessary, acknowledging that the personnel needed to make the system thrive are not available to him.
Interestingly, the manager implied that the limitations regarding the club’s recruitment capabilities came as a surprise to him following his appointment.
During a candid moment on Christmas Eve, Amorim explained: ‘We can play a different way to take more quality from these players because I have the feeling that if we have to play a perfect 3-4-3 we need to spend a lot of money and need time. I’m starting to understand that is not going to happen so maybe I have to adapt.’
When later pressed for more details during a media briefing, he quickly shut down the topic, stating, ‘I don’t want to talk about that. I just focus on the Leeds game.’
Even when questioned on whether he had second thoughts about his public admission, he remained firm: ‘No, no, no. But I don’t want to talk about it.’
The most intriguing moment came when the United boss was asked if the club’s transfer strategy had shifted or if he had originally misunderstood the budget available to him.
He offered only a cryptic response: ‘I don’t want to talk about that… You are very smart, so…’
