Manchester United could not find a way past Everton, despite playing with an extra man for most of the game.
Ruben Amorim was visibly frustrated as his side lost 1-0 to Everton at Old Trafford, with chances being hard to come by throughout.
United did not start well but were handed a huge boost when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping Michael Keane.
A few minutes after the curious red card, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put Everton in front with a curling shot, and United struggled to create any meaningful chances in response.
Gueye’s red card put United in control, but they still found themselves second best throughout the match.
Everton took the lead through Dewsbury-Hall and then focused on holding their shape. They did not register another shot on target after the goal, but this did not matter.
Missing Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, United had little to offer in attack. It was a historic result – their first ever home loss to a team reduced to 10 men.
The statistic from Opta Joe highlights just how rare this defeat is. Before this match, Manchester United had 36 home wins and 10 draws against rivals who had received a red card.
Joshua Zirkzee got his chance to lead the line for United with Cunha and Sesko out, but he did not make much of an impact.
Still, it is hard to find many positives. The stats show there were enough chances to get a result, but once again poor finishing let them down.
United took 23 shots in total, with just six on target. Meanwhile, Everton scored from their only attempt on goal.
Bruno Fernandes forced a save from Jordan Pickford with a long-range effort, and Zirkzee had two headers kept out, but the overall quality in front of goal was nowhere near good enough.
