Ruben Amorim spent nearly 14 months at Manchester United before he was dismissed following criticism over his rigid formations and a lack of results.
However, United legend Ryan Giggs believes Amorim deserves credit for the squad that Michael Carrick has since guided to 3rd in the Premier League.
Giggs argues that while the performances were tough to watch, the foundation Amorim built is exactly what is fueling the club's current success.
Michael Carrick took over as Manchester United's interim manager for his second stint in mid-January 2026 and has since had a transformative impact on the squad.
By stabilizing a struggling side and leading them from 7th to 3rd in the Premier League, he has positioned the club as firm favorites for Champions League qualification.
While most credit Carrick for this turnaround, Ryan Giggs shared a different perspective on ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents’. He defended Ruben Amorim’s work, suggesting the former manager deserves a fair amount of credit for the team’s current resurgence.
Although Giggs admitted he personally "didn't enjoy watching" the football played under the Portuguese, he argued that a true sign of a good manager is the state of the team they leave behind.
He pointed out that many of Amorim's signings are now the ones driving Carrick's success, proving that while the style of play was unpopular, the foundation Amorim built was rock solid.
By clearing out the wrong players and bringing in the right ones, Amorim effectively set the stage for United to climb back into the top three.
"Another sign of a good manager is the team that he leaves behind. Ruben Amorim took a lot of stick for the way that he played. I didn’t enjoy watching it, but actually I think some of his signings have been good. And I think we’re now seeing that now, so even though his legacy probably isn’t great with results and performances, actually for a long time now he’s probably left the club and the players that he got out, he’s left the club in a pretty good place," he said.
Under Amorim, United underwent a major overhaul, spending over £200 million to reshape the squad.
Key signings like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško, Senne Lammens, and Patrick Dorgu were brought in during this period. These players have since become crucial to the team, making a significant impact on United's performances throughout the season.
