Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce butted heads with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher over Mohamed Salah's form.

Salah has been dropped from the starting XI for three consecutive Premier League matches. His situation at Liverpool is unclear after he unleashed a fiery rant at head coach Arne Slot following Saturday's 3-3 draw against Leeds United.

The Liverpool head coach responded by excluding Salah from his 19-player squad for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan. Salah did not travel with the team to Italy.

Slot has not decided whether Salah will be included in the squad for Saturday's Premier League match against Brighton.

Allardyce took exception to Carragher's opinion that Salah's "legs have gone." He spoke on his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast:

"He should really know better," Allardyce said of Carragher's assessment of Salah. "That's an absolutely pathetic statement, but he's good at them, isn't he? He's good at just throwing it out there for a bit of, you know, 'popularity.' To keep himself on the front end of it.

"That's a disgrace. His legs haven't gone. How can his legs go from what he did last year, having the summer off, and then his legs go this year? How can that happen? It doesn't happen overnight. How does he know anyway? What does he know? He doesn't train with him, he doesn't watch him train, he sees him play.

"He might not be doing so well, but that's like many of the Liverpool players. Alexander Isak hasn't played well, so have his legs gone already?"

Salah has scored five goals in 19 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions this season.

Allardyce is best known for his managerial spells in charge of Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United. He most recently managed Leeds United in 2023.
