Centre-back Alessio Romagnoli is expected to be one of the players to benefit from Maurizio Sarri’s recent return to Lazio, as the 30-year-old is now in talks over a new extension to his current contract, Football Italia understands.

What Sarri’s return to Lazio means for Romagonli

Sarri was confirmed as the new head coach of Lazio on Monday, 15 months after he left the Biancocelesti after handing in his resignation during the 2023-24 campaign.

Sarri is a big fan of Romagnoli and sees him as one of the key players in the current Lazio set-up.

So much so that Lazio have opened discussions over a new contract extension, despite the fact that Romagonli’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027. There is expected to be a sit-down meeting to discuss details in the near future.

Romagonli’s presence in the Lazio defence is of fundamental importance to Sarri and his new Biancocelesti project.

The centre-back started in practically every game that he was available for the last time Sarri was in charge, lining up as a starter in 12 consecutive Serie A matches at the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign, before coming down with a calf injury that kept him out of the starting line-up for seven games.

He has since gone on to play a pivotal role in 2024-25 as well, playing in 32 Serie A matches and most notably coming up with the opening goal in the 1-1 draw against city rivals Roma in April.
