Gelsenkirchen police said in a statement that between 500 and 600 people waited for the team at Veltins Arena. When players left the team bus, eggs were thrown at them, and they were verbally abused, the police added.
According to WAZ, players were primarily left unharmed and "got away with a few bruises."
Tuesday's loss marked Schalke's first relegation in over 30 years. They are last in the Bundesliga with a 2-7-21 record. They'll now play in Bundesliga 2 with teams such as VfL Bochum, Furth and Hamburger SV.
