Scott McTominay considers Real Madrid transfer

Scott McTominay has completely transformed the way his career is viewed since leaving Manchester United for Napoli in 2024.

He was never short of trust at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho handed him his senior debut, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regularly valued his physicality and discipline, and Erik ten Hag increasingly used his late runs into the box when United needed goals.

That role eventually became one of McTominay’s biggest strengths, but United still sanctioned his departure after more than two decades at the club.

The decision has aged badly.

Antonio Conte immediately pushed McTominay higher up the pitch at Napoli, giving him greater freedom to attack the box rather than asking him to operate primarily as a holding midfielder.

He responded by becoming one of Serie A’s standout players, helping Napoli win the Scudetto and earning the league’s Player of the Year award.

That rise has only made United’s decision to sell him look more questionable, particularly as he had previously made 255 senior appearances for the club after progressing through Carrington.

McTominay is currently recovering from a medical procedure after Napoli confirmed a mild benign arrhythmia, but another major development has now emerged around his future.

Scott McTominay opens door to Real Madrid move

According to Diario AS, McTominay has admitted he would seriously consider joining Real Madrid if Jose Mourinho came calling.

The Napoli midfielder was asked about the possibility after Mourinho’s return to the Spanish giants.

McTominay said: “If Mourinho called me about Real Madrid, honestly, I’d think about it…”

The connection is significant because Mourinho was the manager who first trusted him with senior football at United.

That relationship has clearly stayed with McTominay throughout his career.

Napoli still have him under contract until 2028, so any move would require a major agreement.

But after proving himself at the very top in Italy, a switch to one of Europe’s biggest clubs no longer feels unrealistic.
