Manchester United fans have been keeping a close eye on Scott McTominay’s meteoric rise since his move to Napoli, and the Scotland international has continued to make headlines this week.
Scott McTominay played a starring role in Scotland’s 4-2 triumph over Denmark, a victory that booked the nation’s place at the 2026 World Cup in North America, and his performances in Italy have cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.
Napoli’s title-winning campaign last season was powered in no small part by McTominay, who scored 13 goals and helped deliver Serie A glory in his debut season.
The midfielder’s transition from Manchester United to Italian football has been seamless, with fans and pundits alike praising his work rate, technical ability, and leadership on the pitch.
His contributions have earned him recognition alongside some of the game’s elite figures, raising expectations for his continued influence both domestically and internationally.
However, the celebrations almost had a terrifying detour on his way to Milan.
Scott McTominay was en route to the Gran Gala del Calcio awards when the plane carrying the Scotland star and Napoli manager Antonio Conte was forced to make an emergency landing, as reported by The Sun.
A warning light in the cockpit suggested the landing gear could not be retracted, prompting the aircraft to circle above Milan before the pilots opted to descend.
Fortunately, the plane landed safely, and the warning light turned out to be a false alarm.
Prominent journalist Carlo Alvino, who was also on board, described the unnerving experience, saying: “There were moments of fear aboard the plane after the captain made his announcement about the landing gear.
“We had to do an emergency landing because of this, but everything resolved itself with just a little anxiety.”
Despite the scare, McTominay went on to enjoy a glittering night in Milan, being named Serie A Player of the Year and earning a place in the Serie A Team of the Year.
The accolade puts him in the company of footballing legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Francesco Totti, and Gianluigi Buffon, highlighting the impact McTominay has made since leaving Manchester United.
The Scotland international’s journey continues to be one to watch, with both club and country reaping the rewards of his talent and determination.
