Sean Dyche was linked with the Tottenham job before Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment.

Roberto De Zerbi has been appointed to try and stop the rot and guide Tottenham Hotspur out of the danger zone that they currently find themselves in. The North London club sit 17th in the standings, just one point above their London rivals West Ham with seven matches left to play.

Relegation would be unthinkable for Spurs. That is clearly why the Tottenham hierarchy have decided to roll the dice again and appoint Roberto De Zerbi, who has replaced Igor Tudor in the dugout. Before De Zerbi’s appointment, though, there were talks about bringing in another interim boss until the end of the season. It was understood that the N17 chiefs could turn to another firefighting boss to get them to safety and then look again in the summer.

Sean Dyche was heavily linked with the then-vacant Spurs job. In fact, Tottenham were considering an ‘SOS call’ to hire Sean Dyche as their new coach. However, he was not interested in a short-term fix and quashed rumours last month while explaining a funny ‘pub story’.

Sean Dyche makes revelation about the Tottenham job

Dyche is currently a free agent after being sacked by Nottingham Forest in February. The Englishman is a seasoned manager in the Premier League, having enjoyed stints at Burnley, Everton and Nottingham Forest. He is best known for his 10 years with Burnley, where the 54-year-old twice won promotion to the Premier League, before keeping the Turf-Moor-based club in the top-flight for six successive seasons.

Despite his expertise in helping sides stay up, Dyche has revealed that he wasn’t approached by Spurs.

“I didn’t laugh it off by the way, I told a true story,” Dyche said on the talkSPORT show.

“I spend a lot of time in London, not working but socially and I just happened to be here at the same time the Tottenham job opened.

“Once you’re in the city, people put two and two together, and it was never about getting drawn into the rumours. I’m telling the truth, there was a lot of speculation and talk, and I was playing it down correctly so.

“It’s no disrespect to anyone, it’s a brilliant club and I’ve said that but it’s nonsense to presuppose an outcome just because you’re in the same city.”

De Zerbi in the house!

Dyche would have made sense in the short term for Tottenham, given his experience of overseeing relegation battles in the Premier League with Burnley and Everton. However, the Hotspur Way chiefs not only wanted someone to take the reins now but also build the squad for the future. Their plan was clear to get a head coach who would be here for a long time.

This has been evidenced by the hiring of De Zerbi on a five-year contract. There is no relegation clause in his lucrative deal until 2031, and the Italian tactician has himself reassured the fans that he’d be staying at the club, no matter what happens at the end of the season. So, it is time for the fans to unite and back our gaffer to get us out of trouble.
