The Seattle Sounders had a chance to put Inter Miami in a tough spot in the MLS standings, but they couldn’t get past Messi at home, losing 3-1—the same scoreline they handed Miami in the Leagues Cup final. Now, the Sounders’ coach is taking some of the blame to ease the pressure on Christian Roldan.
Brian Schmezter is often recalled as one of the best coaches in the Major League Soccer. While the team was able to win against Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup final, it failed to win in the MLS matchup with almost the same formation it won before.
With fans trying to understand what happened, some have turned to the Sounders main player Cristian Roldan for not being able to compete just two weeks after beating Inter Miami, but manager Brian Schmetzer don't think it's fair.
When the reporter asked about Cristian's performance and the overall structure of the team in the game, Schmetzer took on the responsibility of the loss.
“Well, because of the dropping of a couple of points against the Galaxy, we need to take a little bit of a calculated risk and kind of mix the group maybe a little bit differently than I would have," Schmetzer said.
"But again, this is a team sport, and we weren't in our structure. We were kind of saying, ‘well, at some point this one's going to be here, and higher up the field another guy's going to rotate in there.’ So, I think I can own some of that, uh, you know, as far as the overall tactics and getting the guys in the right spots to try and get some more possession,” he told the reporters.

The first goal came from a mistake by Cristian Roldan, who wasn’t at his best. Even though the coach tried to take some of the blame, Roldan still bears responsibility.
“We needed [him] in the first half, but look, I'm not going to shy away from my Cristian. He wasn't his best match, so I tried to get him off,” Schmetzer said.
