Senne Lammens officially handed new Manchester United shirt number

Manchester United have made another significant change to their squad numbers ahead of the new campaign, with Senne Lammens now taking on one of the club’s most iconic shirts.

The Belgian goalkeeper initially arrived at Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp last summer and was handed the No.31.

However, his impressive debut campaign has now been rewarded with a promotion to the No.1 jersey for the 2026/27 season.

Senne Lammens quickly established himself as Michael Carrick’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 33 appearances and keeping eight clean sheets as United secured a third-place finish in the Premier League.

His performances were also recognised individually, with the Belgian winning the Premier League Transfer of the Season award for 2025/26.

Senne Lammens gets new shirt number

Manchester United officially confirmed on their website that Senne Lammens will now wear the famous No.1 shirt for Manchester United, following Altay Bayindir’s loan move to Celta Vigo.

The change represents another milestone for the 23-year-old, who even cut his summer break short to return to Manchester ahead of schedule for United’s pre-season preparations.

He now joins an exclusive list of goalkeepers to permanently wear the No.1 shirt during the Premier League era.

Peter Schmeichel was the first, holding the number from 1992 until 1999, before Mark Bosnich, Fabien Barthez and Tim Howard followed.

Edwin van der Sar and David De Gea were also long-term holders of the shirt, adding to the prestige attached to the number at Old Trafford.

Manchester United supporters will be hoping Senne Lammens can make the No.1 shirt his own and avoid following the same path as his predecessor, Altay Bayindir, during his time at Old Trafford.

With Bayindir now temporarily out of the picture, Lammens has been handed the responsibility of carrying the No.1 into a new season, and his performances last season suggest he has more than earned it.
