Sergino Dest has been unlucky with injuries in the past and has been out of the USMNT for a while. The 24-year-old right back missed the Copa America with the USMNT last summer due to an ACL injury and returned to action this year.
He played a couple of games in March and in May with PSV. He finished the season with PSV in the Eredivisie. He was not called up for the USMNT for the Gold Cup this summer to focus on recuperation from ACL surgery
He has stayed with PSV during the summer and has even featured in PSV's 1-0 friendly win over Union Saint-Gilloise. PSV had a second friendly match in preparation for the new season ahead, but suffered another injury.
In a friendly against SV Elversberg, Dest suffered an injury in the 20th minute of the game. The USMNT right-back started the match and was subbed off due to a suspected thigh/groin injury.
PSV ended up winning the friendly 3-1, and Dest's manager, Peter Bosz, revealed how bad the injury Dest suffered. From the words of the manager, it doesn't sound like bad news, but Dest constantly getting injured concerns USMNT fans.
Peter Bosz: "I haven't spoken to him yet, but I understood from the doctor that it was not too bad."
Dest played 45 minutes in the friendly match against Union Saint-Gilloise and was supposed to play 45 minutes against SV Elversberg. PSV has two more scheduled friendly matches in July.
They are set to face Athletic Bilbao and FC Eindhoven at the end of the month. Their first game of the season will be on August 3 in the Johan Cruijff Shield against Go Ahead Eagles.
Though Dest's injury seems minor, the right-back will have to prepare for a busy few weeks with PSV ahead of the new season. Their first Eredivisie game will be on August 9 against Sparta Rotterdam at home.
PSV is the current Dutch champions after winning the league last season with 79 points, one point ahead of Ajax. Dest and PSV will be playing in the Champions League next season, which will continue the new format of 36 teams.
With the World Cup on the horizon, Dest will look to recover his fitness and form to be called up by USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino for friendly games in September.
The USMNT will face South Korea and Japan in September, and the team will plan to have more friendlies to prepare for the World Cup.
Dest played in the 2022 World Cup with the USMNT and is one of the top names of the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, despite the lack of activity over the last months due to injury.
