Tottenham Hotspur’s chronic injury problems in defence led to them signing Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens during the January transfer window.
Danso did his bit upon his arrival at N17, and on May 31 the club announced that the Austrian’s loan move from RC Lens has become permanent following an obligation clause. However, before he was signed, Daniel Levy was keen on acquiring the services of AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.
The North London club were in advanced negotiations and had even almost agreed a deal with AC Milan, only for the centre-back to snub the opportunity to return to the Premier League. Now, the Lilywhites are back on his trail, having secured Champions League football, but they could face competition from clubs such as Newcastle United, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, AC Milan have told Fikayo Tomori that he won’t be a regular starter under new boss Max Allegri next season. The decision of the Rossoneri could see the central defender leave for pastures new in search of regular football, with the World Cup happening next year.
Milan’s decision should come as a boost for Tottenham in their pursuit of Tomori. Ange Postecoglou had to rely on makeshift players to do a job in defence last term owing to persistent injuries. With Cristian Romero heading for a potential exit in this transfer window, Micky van de Ven yet to prove his fitness across two seasons and Radu Dragusin out with an ACL rupture, Daniel Levy will need to bring in a quality defender to improve the team’s first XI as well as squad depth.
Tomori, in that regard, would be a good choice. A youth product from Chelsea’s academy, the England international struggled for opportunities in the first team and managed only 27 Premier League appearances. The Calgary native built his career at Milan, where he has made close to 180 appearances.
The centre-back has got sufficient experience of the highest level under his belt now, and with him already 27 years old, he could be tempted to move back to the Premier League if an opportunity arises. There are several English clubs vying for his signature, so Tomori certainly isn’t short of suitors.
As for Tottenham, Tomori would be the perfect replacement of Romero as they look to compete in the Champions League next season. The ex-Chelsea man can play in a high line, quickly cover the spaces behind while pressing high thanks to pace and agility. He is also robust in the challenge and strong in the air, whilst being efficient on the ball.
It remains to be seen how much fee would Milan want to sell their defender. Nonetheless, Spurs must be all over Tomori’s signature.
