Tottenham Hotspur are scouring the market, as the N17 chiefs look to resolve their midfield problems with reinforcements in the off-season.
The Lilywhites are severely lacking quality in the middle of the park to control and dictate the pace of the game, and the injury situation has not helped their cause either. Without any second thoughts, Spurs need to find a way to maintain their top-flight status this month if they are to lure top talents for next season.
Signing players who are ready-made and could immediately fortify the squad is seen as a priority for Tottenham, after spending the recent few years investing heavily in youth. There are question marks over Joao Palhinha’s future, while Yves Bissouma is set to be released upon the expiry of his contract in June. Pape Matar Sarr is being monitored by a host of European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
Amid the uncertain futures of several midfielders, Tottenham have reportedly been keeping tabs on Galatasaray midfielder Gabriel Sara. The Brazilian has been among Galatasaray’s standout performers this season, chipping in with six goals and five assists in 42 appearances. He has played a key role in Galatasaray winning the Super Lig title.
Of course, Gabriel Sara’s performances have piqued the interest of several clubs across Europe. Manchester United recently entered the race to sign the 26-year-old, while Napoli remain his admirers too. Now, there is another key development surrounding the Galatasaray star.
According to a report from Turkish outlet Takvim, Aston Villa are now expected to launch their move to sign Sara from Galatasaray. The versatile midfielder will cost more than €40m for any potential suitors, which might complicate Aston Villa’s matters if they fail to comply with PSR.
The Villans have qualified for the Europa League final, where they will face German side SC Freiburg next week. It is an alternate route for them to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and Unai Emery is certain to go all guns blazing to win the Europa League after seeing his team’s form dip in the Premier League in the last couple of months.
Presently, Villa hold a clear edge over Tottenham in the race to sign Sara, who could be tempted to move back to England, where he spent two years with Norwich City. They could offer him a leading role in midfield next season, and potentially Champions League football.
Spurs, on the other hand, are battling hard to stay among the big boys. If they preserve their top-flight status, the North Londoners could rival Villa, Man United and Napoli for the Brazilian international. However, with Villa planning to up their ante to sign Sara, Spurs might miss out on his services.
