In a somewhat underwhelming season so far for Manchester United, Shea Lacey has stood out as a rare bright light.
A goal against Brighton. An assist against Roma. Both times, Lacey has proved himself at first-team level. Both times, he has attracted even more praise from those watching.
One goal and two assists in Premier League 2, on top of his first-team success, present a player in transition, one that could break through into the first-team properly in the coming seasons.
His club-level success is also catching the eye of those at international level, with him currently playing for England at Under-20 level.
Having been born in Liverpool, Lacey has represented England from Under-15s level all the way through to Under-20s.
His eligibility for Ireland, through his dad Paddy, has raised questions about whether the 19-year-old will play for England or Ireland at senior level.
Republic of Ireland boss Henrik Hallgrimsson has now broken his silence on the matter in a press conference ahead of his side’s Nations League clash with Austria next week.
“That would be for other guys in the association,” Hallgrimsson said.
“But it was interesting looking at his Irish connection.”
Crucial times are approaching for Lacey as he makes decisions that could dictate the path of his professional career.
The choice between England and Ireland may be one the 19-year-old is forced to confront in the coming years, and is something that could possibly enter the frame.
For now, though, full focus remains on both his playing duties at Manchester United and his efforts representing England Under-20s.
Ensuring that those duties are fulfilled to their best standard may be imperative in ensuring that Shea Lacey makes the steps needed to break through into Michael Carrick’s first-team fully.
