It’s transfer deadline day, and there’s little escaping the dark cloud hanging over Bramall Lane. A winless start under new boss Ruben Selles has left Sheffield United rooted to the bottom of the Championship table with zero points on the board.

The Blades, who finished 3rd last season, have endured a miserable opening few weeks, capped off by failing to register a single shot on target in either of their first two away league matches.

Selles will be desperate for a strong end to the summer window to inject some much-needed positivity into the squad and fanbase as we head into the first international break of the season.

The Dreaded Gustavo Hamer Saga

One name to watch is United’s star player Gustavo Hamer. According to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink, Hamer could emerge as an option for PSV Eindhoven should Brentford move late for Joey Veerman. For now, Brentford appear to have cooled their pursuit on the 26-year-old, and PSV remain intent on keeping Veerman, but things could shift quickly.

To lose Hamer on the final day of the window would sum up Sheffield United’s start to life in their era after Chris Wilder. The 28-year-old has creativity and technique in abundance, having registered 28 goal contributions in his first two seasons in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield United to Sign Experienced Championship Winger

Elsewhere, United are in talks with Ipswich Town over a potential loan deal for Republic of Ireland winger Chiedozie Ogbene, per Andy Giddings. Ogbene, 28, offers searing pace and directness out wide as well as great workrate, attributes that Selles’ side have sorely lacked in their blunt attacking displays thus far.

Ogbene would give the Blades a much-needed boost to their counterattack threat as the experienced Championship winger thrives at carrying the ball at speed and driving into the final third. He’d also provide United with flexibility due to his ability to play in a right wingback role in a back five.

After suffering an achilles injury last season, Ipswich have decided to allow Ogbene go out on loan in order to try and recapture his form that showed during his time at Luton Town.

Blades Set to Announce Alex Matos; What Can He Add to the Team?

Meanwhile, a deal has been agreed between Chelsea and Sheffield United for Alex Matos, with the 20-year-old midfielder set to join on a permanent basis. The transfer is expected to be announced officially soon, according to Luca Bendoni.

Matos is of the mould of N’golo Kante; he is an energetic box-to-box midfielder who can carry the ball through midfield. The Chelsea academy product has the versatility to play deep as a number six, or he can play further forward.

The 20-year-old was on loan at Oxford United in the second half of last season where made 20 appearances (ten starts) for Gary Rowett’s side. While Matos does have very good potential, the Blades will be hoping his lack of Championship experience won’t matter too much.
