Sir Alex Ferguson remains the most iconic figure in Manchester United’s history, having overseen 26 glittering years at Old Trafford, where he won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and lifted the club to the very peak of English football.
The Scotsman stepped down in 2013, leaving behind a legacy that no manager since has been able to fully replicate.
Ruben Amorim arrived in the summer of 2025 with the difficult task of restoring stability to the club.
The early weeks of Amorim’s tenure were dominated by tactical doubts, poor results and speculation over whether he was the right man to lead the rebuild at Old Trafford.
Gradually, however, his ideas began to take shape, and United have since enjoyed a five-match unbeaten run that has pulled them up to seventh in the league and restored a sense of optimism around Carrington.
Amorim’s summer signings—Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens—have played a major role in the turnaround, with Mbeumo winning Player of the Month and Lammens surprising many by remaining unbeaten in every match he has played.
It is against this improving backdrop that Sir Alex Ferguson has now spoken publicly about the progress being made under Amorim.
The former manager has praised the impact of three of Manchester United’s summer signings after the club extended their unbeaten run to five games and secured back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in 20 months.
United’s strong October saw manager Ruben Amorim named Manager of the Month, while winger Bryan Mbeumo earned the Player of the Month award after joining from Brentford and scoring six goals in 12 games.
Matheus Cunha, who arrived from Wolves, has grown into an important figure in Amorim’s attack.
But goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been the biggest surprise after debuting in a 2-0 win over Sunderland and remaining unbeaten in every match he has played.
Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking from Bahrain, said, “The manager’s had some good signs, particularly the goalkeeper.
“He’s been outstanding. He’s only played three or four games, and he’s looking really good.
“And the boy Mbeumo and Cunha, the players from Wolves and Brentford, they’ve added to it.
“I hope the manager gets a bit of success because at United you need to have success and there are signs they are getting better.”
United had previously lost three of their opening six Premier League matches and were knocked out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby Town, but speculation about Amorim’s future has eased as the team climbed to seventh in the table.
Ferguson, who will turn 84 on New Year’s Eve and remains a regular visitor to Old Trafford, watched United claim their first win at Liverpool in nearly a decade in October.
He told Raceday RTV via The Sun: “I think back-to-back wins is something teams like United should always expect.
“But having gone through a cycle where it’s improved where it has to come by waiting and being patient, I’m enjoying it now.”
