Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is widely seen as the greatest football manager in history.
Ferguson has success at Aberdeen prior to being in charge of United, winning three Scottish league titles and a European Cup Winners’ Cup.
In fact, he remains the last non-Celtic or Rangers manager to win Scotland’s domestic league title.
Ferguson was appointed as United manager in 1986. He replaced Ron Atkinson, who was sacked 10 weeks into the season.
Since then, Ferguson went on to win 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League winners medals. In addition, he won five FA Cups and four League Cups in addition to a European Super Cup and Club World Cup.
During this spell, United created history under Ferguson’s stewardship, winning the treble in 1999.
They did so in the most dramatic of fashion, scoring two injury time goals to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at the Nou Camp.
A further testament to his success is how much United have struggled following his retirement in 2013.
Ferguson has always been present at United games since stepping down from the role. He has also gone into other non-football business ventures.
The BBC bave reported that Ferguson has teamed up with businessman Dr Murray Rowden to start a scholarship scheme for disadvantaged students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).
Their pledge of £500,000 will aim to fund the education for around 150 undergraduates.
Ferguson called the initiative, which will also provide mentoring for the students, “extraordinary”. He said: “I’ve witnessed first-hand the life-changing impact that scholarships, travel awards, and mentorship can have on young people.
“Bringing all of this support together in one unique package will give students not only the financial means, but the confidence and encouragement they need to truly excel.
“Giving young people a start in life is one of the greatest gifts we can offer, and one that has brought me immense pride and joy over the years.
“I hope others will join me in backing this extraordinary initiative and help open doors for the next generation to thrive.”
Ferguson launched the GCU Foundation in 2015 and has since raised over £11 million for disadvantaged students to help them earn scholarships, awards and career opportunities.
Since then he has helped raise more than £11m for disadvantaged students to fund scholarships, awards and career-shaping opportunities.
