English club soccer has had a good number of great managers, both past and present. Their clubs have had glory in the European Cup and Champions League. These are a few of the greatest soccer managers in the history of the English league.

Alex Ferguson

The former manager of Manchester Utd has perhaps the most excellent record in the modern game. With Utd, Ferguson has won more English league titles than any manager before, eclipsing the likes of Paisley. Ferguson has won the double three times, more than any other manager. In European soccer, his teams have also won the Champions League twice. Ferguson has also won further honors with other clubs, such as Aberdeen, but his glory with Utd eclipses the likes of Paisley and Shankly.

Arsène Wenger

Wenger is among the most successful foreign managers in English soccer. His three Premiership titles and seven FA Cups (a record number for a manager) have ensured his record is among the best in the game. Wenger has also won two doubles with Arsenal, and his team had a historic undefeated league season. They never finished lower than sixth in the Premiership over his 22 seasons with the club. Admittedly, in European football, the Gunners had less impact but still reached the final of the Champions League. Aside from this, Wenger also had success with Monaco, where he won the French league title.

Bob Paisley

Paisley is Liverpool’s most successful manager. One of the Liverpool bootroom coaches, Paisley, replaced Shankley and took the club to further heights. Winning trophies in almost all his seasons with the club, Liverpool was particularly successful in Europe, where they won three European Cup trophies, which remains a record won by any English manager to this day.

Herbert Chapman

Chapman was an influential club manager, both for Huddersfield and Arsenal. Undoubtedly, Huddersfield’s most successful manager, Chapman, was an excellent football tactician. With Arsenal, he took the club to their first silverware, where he won the FA Cup, and then their first league title. Chapman’s tactics played a big part in this, as his WM formation became well-established in the English game. This, along with some astute signings for his club, saw Arsenal emerge as the dominant team of the 1930s.

Matt Busby

Busby was not quite as successful as Ferguson, but his Utd teams were cherished. Aside from numerous domestic honors won with the club, including the league title, FA Cup, etc, Busby’s team was also the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968. This Utd side beat Benfica in the final and so became the best team in Europe. With such players as Charlton, Best, and co they had a fine team.

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola is Manchester City’s greatest soccer manager. During his 10 seasons as Man City manager, Pep’s teams have dominated English soccer by winning an astonishing 16 major trophies (excluding Charity Shields and Super Cups). Guardiola has won six Premier League titles, five League Cups, three FA Cups, a FIFA World Club championship, and the coveted Champions League. The 2022–23 season, in which Man City won the league, FA Cup, and Champions League triple, was the greatest of his reign. Pep could still win even more trophies at Manchester City if he sticks around.
