Slot to Real Madrid: 'Silly rumours cannot destabilise Liverpool'

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot shuns the idea of the situation between Real Madrid and Trent Alexander-Arnold destabilizing the club. Slot emphasized that there are always talks about the players playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Real used their usual ugly transfer tactics by approaching Alexander-Arnold in January to create uncertainty at Liverpool amid contract negotiation. The Spanish club has infamously used a similar approach to lure top players from other big clubs around the world.

Liverpool needs to maintain their focus on the Premier League and other top competitions halfway into their successful season. The Reds have secured 23 victories from 27 games in all competitions, currently securing a top spot in the Premier League.

Furthermore, the Merseyside giant are at the top of the Champions League table and have reached the Carabao Cup semifinals. Meanwhile, Real are second in La Liga behind Atletico Madrid and have struggled in the Champions League this season.

Furthermore, The Reds beat Real 2-0 in their Champions League game at Anfield during the first half of the season. Speaking to the reporters in the pre-Manchester United match press conference (via Liverpoolfc.com), Slot shuns the idea of any Liverpool player causing destabilization due to incessant transfer rumours or contract uncertainty while talking about the Trent and Real situation. He said:

“If it would destabilise players at Liverpool if other people talk about them, then we would really have a problem. If you play at one of the biggest clubs in the world, everybody always – for 12 months long – is talking about you. Sometimes in relation to other clubs, that happens so, so, so many times for our players that if that destabilises them then we really would have had a problem – not only now but in the past six months. I think there were some talks about our players also in the last six months and I don’t think they destabilised them at all.”

Slot has made a valid point as the rumour mill is never-ending with pointless transfer talks involving Liverpool and players. There are transfer talks involving Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and other senior team players as well.

At this level of professional football, limitless conversation about players and their future is part and parcel of the sport. Liverpool needs to ensure that the situation will not cause any lapse in focus and undo all their hard work so far.
