Daniel Levy’s decision to step down as Tottenham chairman might just be a turning point in the club’s history

There has been a lot of chopping and changing at Tottenham in recent years, but nothing comes close to the sudden departure of Daniel Levy. The Spurs chairman decided to call it quits this week after leading the club for quarter of a century. It is fair to say that Levy has done wonders for the North London club, but the Executive Chairman decided to remove the last remaining obstacle to the pursuit of challenging for the titles… himself.

The impact Daniel Levy has had on Spurs is up for debate and fans will continue to have differences when it comes to the Englishman’s decision-making while running the club. However, one must not forget that Levy successfully managed to lead the Lilywhites from a mid-table team, to one that competed for a Champions League spot in the Premier League regularly.

Not to mention the state-of-the-art stadium he financed and built for Spurs in the last decade. The stadium and the revenue it generates weekly is something that every other club envies, even if it is their trophy cabinet that the Lilywhites envy. Not only that, but the constant changing of managers and not backing them is also one of the main factors for Levy’s downfall at N17.

Tottenham set for a new era as Daniel Levy calls it quits

It is fair to say that Daniel Levy has done wonders for Tottenham off the pitch during his time at N17. But the inability to go past the final hurdle on the pitch is what drove the fans against Levy and board. The North London club may have a world-class stadium, great financial deals, and wage structure. Yet, the fans will always remember the Englishman for his failures, that is, not being able to achieve what mattered the most… winning trophies.

Now, ex-Spurs keeper Paul Robinson has shared his verdict on Daniel Levy’s untimely departure from N17. Speaking to the BBC, Robinson said,

“There’s going to be mixed feelings amongst the fans about Daniel. The criticism that he will be always be faced with is the investment being used correctly on the pitch. It’s a really strange time. I don’t know why they’ve chosen now, a couple of games into a new season.”

The ex-player added,

“But there’s going to be interesting times ahead. There will be mixed emotions but he can certainly hold his head up high on the business front. He’s always had the best interest of the club at heart. I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Paul Robinson believes many fans will be sitting on the fence and reserving their judgement on Daniel Levy. The ex-player admits that Tottenham’s timing to relieve Levy from his duties is ‘strange’, as the Lilywhites waited an entire summer to go through with it. However, Robinson believes that the Englishman can be proud of his work, as he always wanted the best for North London club.

A new era certainly beckons for Spurs as they look to move on from the man that led the club for 25 years. A major task for the Lilywhites will be to oversee the club’s developments on and off the pitch. Credit where its due, Daniel Levy was a master in handling the financial side of the football club. So, whoever replaces him for the long-term has a massive task of replicating the same brilliance off the pitch, whilst also ensuring success on the pitch.
