Antony left Manchester United for Real Betis despite interest from Bayern Munich

There were a lot of links and rumours along the timeline of the recently concluded transfer window, which saw Antony being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with a few possible clubs interested in his signature, given his impressive performances for Real Betis during his loan spell in the last season.

And the former Ajax winger went on to complete a move to the La Liga side following what was a difficult summer for him, given how he was training alone at Carrington, and he went on to explain how his move to the Seville-based club was about loyalty and not about money.

Antony went on to reveal how he turned down an offer to move to Bayern Munich in order to keep his word to secure a transfer to Real Betis.

He also went on to admit how several clubs made contact to secure his signatures, but Betis has been in his heart, and following what was a 40-day wait in a hotel as his future hung in the balance, the 25-year-old finally ended up moving to Betis.

Antony chose Betis move over Bayern transfer

It is one of those rare stories where a player chooses his heart over the finances on offer, given the fact that Vincent Kompany’s Bayern would have been the more lucrative option in terms of stage as well as money, but it is this sense of happiness and commitment which was a matter of priority for him.

He confirmed how Betis was always his choice, with his wife already settling into the life in Seville.

Speaking to Spanish outlet COPE, the 25-year-old said:

“I spoke to Bayern Munich the day before everything was done with Betis. I don’t know if it [the offer] was seven million [net], I didn’t talk about that,” Antony is quoted as saying.

“But when I spoke with them, I said I gave my word to Betis, and that everything was 95% finalized, and I’ll stick to my word.

“Out of respect, affection, and knowing that I’m happy here. I feel calm about making this decision with all due respect to Bayern Munich, a top three club in the world. I don’t know what will happen in the future.”

Author Opinion

While it was a shaky end to his time at Manchester United, which was him struggling for consistency at Old Trafford, hopefully for his sake, this move to Betis gives him a sense of a fresh start, and given the fact that he turned down a move to Bayern Munich, it shows how he needs to have a sense of stability and a renewed sense of purpose right now.
