Tottenham Hotspur officially confirmed today that their first-choice goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, will undergo surgery next week for a hernia. The club described it as a minor procedure, strategically timed to minimise disruption to the season, especially with no matches scheduled for about three weeks after their upcoming game due to the international break, plus early exits from the FA Cup and Champions League. The club issues the following statement on Friday:

We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario will undergo surgery next week on a hernia. The minor procedure for the Italy international goalkeeper has been timed to have as minimal impact on our season as possible. Guglielmo will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately, and it is hoped that he could return to action within the next month

Vicario is expected to play in Tottenham’s crucial Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday (a key relegation six-pointer), despite the issue. He’ll then have the operation shortly after (reports suggest possibly Monday). Recovery and rehabilitation will start immediately with the club’s medical staff.

The hope is that he could return to action within the next month (up to around 4 weeks sidelined).
This rules him out of Italy’s upcoming international commitments and comes at a challenging time for Spurs, who are battling in the lower half of the Premier League table. It may lead to backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky stepping in during Vicario’s absence, following his recent struggles. ]]

Will Kinksky be favoured after his recent collapse in the Champions League?

The match turned into a nightmare almost immediately: In the 6th minute, Kinsky slipped during a routine goal kick, gifting the ball to an Atlético player (leading to a goal by Marcos Llorente).

Two more goals followed quickly (involving Antoine Griezmann and another, reaching 3-0 by around the 15th minute), with at least two directly attributed to Kinsky’s errors (including a fumbled back pass or similar mishandling).

By the 17th minute, with Tottenham trailing 3-0, Tudor substituted him off—replacing him with regular goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Kinsky appeared distraught, heading down the tunnel in tears, consoled by staff and teammates, while Tudor reportedly did not acknowledge him during the change.
