Tottenham Hotspur are looking to revamp the squad for next season as they prepare for life under Thomas Frank.
The Lilywhites have been slow movers in the transfer market, turning just loans of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel into permanent deals thus far. Regardless of the club enduring their worst-ever Premier League finish and a new coach at the helm, Daniel Levy and Co. have shown no urgency whatsoever in strengthening the squad.
The alterations to the squad need to happen quickly, though as pre-season is imminent. One area the club bosses are focused on addressing is the midfield unit. This is because Tottenham were overrun, outworked and outsmarted in the middle of the park for the vast majority of the past season, with none of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur doing their jobs properly. Lucas Bergvall was the only central midfielder to emerge with some credit.
Thus, it is not surprising that the club wants to bolster the midfield department this summer. As per recent reports, Tottenham are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
Jacob Ramsey is unhappy at Aston Villa and would be open to an exit to enjoy regular game time elsewhere. Indeed, the Englishman struggled for starts last season, managing just 25 across his 45 appearances in all competitions, as Unai Emery preferred the likes of Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, Amadou Onana, Morgan Rogers and Marco Asensio in midfield and wide areas.
It is believed that Spurs boss Thomas Frank is an admirer of Ramsey and wants to bring him to White Hart Lane. In fact, Tottenham have also spoken to the player’s agents about the possibility and structure of a deal. They are contemplating making an offer for the creative talent.
Now, former scout Mick Brown has dropped the latest update on the midfielder’s links to Spurs. He says Ramsey would be “happy to make the move” to Tottenham if they are prepared to offer him more regular minutes than his boyhood club.
“Jacob Ramsey has to make a decision,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“In his own mind, he’ll weigh up whether he thinks he’s going to be a regular in the Villa team. If that’s not the case, he has to ask the same question about whether he would be at Tottenham.
“From what I hear, Spurs would be prepared to offer him more minutes from the start of games than he is currently getting at Villa. If that is the case, I’m sure he would be happy to make that move.
“He’s had doubts about whether he’s going to be a regular starting XI player at Villa, or if he’s going to be better served moving somewhere else. So, a move to Tottenham would be a fresh start and a new environment for him.
“There have been a few questions about what his future at Villa might look like, because the manager isn’t certain he’s going to be a big part of the plans. That opens the door for Spurs, because Thomas Frank likes rates him and he’s one they’ve been interested in for a while.”
Signing Ramsey would see skipper Son Heung-min lose his place in the first XI next season. The Villa star would suit Frank’s system, as the Danish tactician tends to play with inverted wingers during build-up. The former England youth international thrives when he cuts inside from the left and creates chances for his teammates.
If Ramsey can stay fit and lock his position quickly, he’d prove to be a smashing signing for Tottenham.
