Pedro Porro reiterated that Tottenham players used trolls as motivation for UEL glory

Tottenham Hotspur star Pedro Porro has hit out at critics after helping the club end its 17-year wait for a major trophy. The Lilywhites managed to do the unthinkable and won the Europa League this season, exceeding all expectations. It was a historic achievement by Ange Postecoglou, as he became just the third manager in the club’s history to win a European silverware.

Spurs had become a meme in recent times… a personification of the word “Spursy.” The North London club would always fall short of winning silverware after doing all the hard work throughout the season. The fans had accepted the reality that luck just wasn’t on their side and winning a major trophy would always be a long shot.

But Ange Postecoglou arrived at N17 with a different mentality and promised to shift the narrative at the club. The Australian endured a solid first season at the helm, but it was his second season in the dugout that made history at the club. The ex-Celtic boss promised to win a title at the start of the season, and it is fair to say that he delivered on his promise.

Europa League success might just be a turning point for Tottenham

Well, there was a sigh of relief all around N17 as soon as the final whistle blew on 22nd May. Tottenham had finally ended their long-standing trophy drought and the fans could finally see their club lift silverware after years of near misses. Ange Postecoglou’s men managed to get over the line against Manchester United, and it also put an end to all the trolls and memes targeting the club’s lack of silverware.

Full-back Pedro Porro also reiterated that the players used the trolls as motivation to prove the critics wrong. Speaking to The Guardian, Porro said,

“A meme. That’s just, like, people’s opinion. Of course that reaches you, but we don’t care … actually, in fact, I would say thanks to them because it can be extra motivation, petrol to fuel you. And we won. Let them talk and do all the memes they want now. The coach said: yes, we’re Tottenham.”

The Spurs defender added,

“We have to believe we’re a big team. Now people have to respect Tottenham a bit more because they’re Europa League champions. The season had been really bad in the Premier League and winning a European title brought such happiness. The fans had suffered; we had suffered too. But it’s not how it starts, it’s how it ends.”

Pedro Porro was quick to thank the critics and the trolls, and insisted that the team used it as motivation to get over the line in the final. The Spurs defender insisted that Tottenham are a big team and the club deserves respect after becoming the Europa League champions. Porro acknowledged the tough Premier League season, but he was happy that the club ended the campaign on a high and won the Europa League for the fans.

Spurs have put an end to the age-old ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’ meme after getting over the line in the final. The Lilywhites held their ground, were defensively resolute, and Manchester United pay for their mistakes. Winning the Europa League also ensured Champions League qualification for next season.

Will this be a turning point for Tottenham? Only time will tell. The North London club must focus on using this success as a springboard for a new era at N17. They can no longer be complacent heading into next season, and the fans will hope that the club builds on the Europa League success as the Lilywhites need to close the gap on their rivals in the Premier League next year.
