There’s nothing like competing with a friend in a casual game of video game soccer with controllers in hand. Depending on which side you were on, these were the players who made you taunt your best friend or caused you to throw your controller in a fit of rage.

Here are the most dominant video game soccer characters to ever grace the virtual pitch.

Note: This list will not include overpowered FIFA/FC Ultimate Team cards. To be on this list, a player must be accessible in either single player mode, local multiplayer or career mode (without rating progression).

10) Jeff and Mark (tied) (Nintendo All-Stars) – Super Soccer/Super Formation Soccer

If you’ve ever played Super Soccer on the Super Nintendo, you know how difficult it is to beat the Nintendo All-Stars.

After winning the World Tournament in Super Soccer, a cutscene will play where the referee steals your trophy and challenges you to play against a maxed-out team dressed in all black kits.

The Nintendo All-Stars played an insane 2-3-5 formation with Jeff as the central striker. Both Jeff and Mark have 16 attack and 16 run ratings, which go above the game’s maximum.

To play as the Nintendo All-Stars in an exhibition game, first have player one choose any team. Player 2 unlocks the Nintendo All-Stars by selecting any team, holding down B and the start button.

9) Ronaldinho (Barcelona and Brazil) – FIFA 06/FIFA Soccer 06

Get ready to pull out all the tricks with “The Samba King.” Ronaldinho is tied for the highest overall in FIFA 06 at 95. His 98 dribbling, 97 ball control, 97 shot accuracy, 97 creativity, 95 pace and 95 long shots will torment any defense.

8) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool and England) – PES 6/Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007

Gerrard’s powerful long-range drives were often unstoppable in real life and on the virtual pitch. The Liverpool captain had everything in his locker to dominate a match in all aspects, and that is accurately reflected in PES 6.

Though Gerrard isn’t the highest rated player in the game at 90 overall, he possessed a 99 short pass speed, a 97 long pass accuracy, a 96 long pass speed, a 96 shot power and a 89 mentality rating.

7) David Beckham (Real Madrid and England) – FIFA Football 2004/FIFA Soccer 2004

In FIFA 2003 and 04, you could bend it like Beckham on steroids. The amount of swerve that you could place on a free kick was ridiculous with the targeting system, power gauge and ball spin.

If you fouled Beckham anywhere near free-kick territory, it was game over. Beckham is rated 89 overall in FIFA 03.

6) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Portugal) – FIFA 18

Ronaldo’s 5-star skill moves, 96 reactions, 95 composure, 95 attacking position, 95 jumping, 94 shot power and 94 finishing meant that if you played FIFA 18 as Real Madrid or Portugal, you were going to see plenty of his Siuuuu celebration.

He is rated 94 overall in FIFA 18.

5) Thierry Henry (Arsenal and France) – FIFA Football 2005/FIFA Soccer 2005

With a 97 rating, Henry was devastating in FIFA 05 with his 98 pace, 98 dribbling and 97 shooting.

4) Ronaldo (Inter Milan and Brazil) – FIFA: Road to World Cup 98

The O.G. Ronaldo ruled the soccer world in the late 1990s. At 97 overall, he was the highest-rated player in FIFA: Road to World Cup 98.

His 99 speed, 99 acceleration, 99 heading, 99 ball control, 99 agility and 95 reaction ratings made virtual Ronaldo just as unstoppable as the real thing.

3) Adriano (Inter Milan and Brazil) – PES 5/World Soccer: Winning Eleven 9

With 99 shot power, 90 attack, 90 acceleration, 89 shot accuracy and 88 top speed, Adriano was a nightmare in PES 5. He is notoriously overpowered and is rated a 98 overall.

Play as Inter or Brazil, and you’re going to drive your friends crazy.

2) Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina) – PES 2010/World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2010

Virtual Messi could not be contained with his deft twists and turns in PES 2010. His 98 attack, 98 agility, 98 dribble accuracy, 98 dribble speed and 96 technique gave Argentina’s No. 10 an overall rating of 101.

1) Allejo (Brazil) - International Superstar Soccer Deluxe/ISS Deluxe/Jikkyou World Soccer 2: Fighting Eleven

Based on famed Brazilian striker Bebeto, Allejo was the master of bicycle kicks, masterful flicks and turning defenders inside out.
