The 26-year-old is currently plying his trade in Saudi.

Darwin Nunez has been a household name on the English shores, but he has never quite replicated the expectations on his initial transfer that made him one of the most talked-about players in the league.

But the Uruguayan is eyeing a redemption and is looking to return to European football when the summer transfer window comes around, and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs being approached for his signing.

Darwin Nunez eyeing Europe return after Benzema problem

Alongside the Lilywhites, Premier League duo Newcastle United and Chelsea are also in the picture to sign the former Liverpool striker who appears desperate to leave Saudi Arabia, according to a recent report from TEAMtalk.

Nunez was dropped from Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad after they signed Karim Benzema, given the restrictions to register overseas players, and this has left the Uruguayan without a place in the league matchday group.

With playing time hard to come by, it has pushed the Benfica academy graduate to push to find a new club whilst also being willing to take a significant pay cut on his current £400,000-per-week wages if the right project presents itself in Europe.

Al-Hilal brought Nunez in a £56.6m deal from Liverpool following his struggles at Merseyside. But the club signing Benzema has effectively ended his involvement at his current employers.

But the Premier League trio are not alone in pushing for his signing. The likes of Juventus, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund have all been named as the potential suitors in the aforementioned report, suggesting that the 26-year-old, with 14 G/A this season, is barely short of options, given that at his best, he still remains one of the more physically imposing #9s in the market.

Tottenham’s new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, is someone who likes to operate with more intelligent number nines who are pressing-oriented and have that versatility within their system (rather than a traditional target man who simply finishes chances).

And if you look back at his record at Liverpool, it was mixed exactly because of that tension between the raw physical ability that he has and the tactical demands placed on him. He produced brilliant moments, but never with consistency, and always struggled to make that final decision in the final third.

While he has a lot of raw ability, De Zerbi would have to rejuvenate him quite a lot if he were to work at N17.
