Chelsea’s academy continues to produce talented players, but the club have not always managed to make full use of that output.

In the process, they have let more than a few notable prospects slip away – including one who left a strong impression on Cole Palmer.

He is a winger who the club eventually let go for a surprisingly modest fee.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, once one of the academy’s more promising prospects, left Stamford Bridge for a mere £3 million.

He was highly rated coming out of Cobham, having turned heads with his performances in the youth ranks.

Palmer saw that first-hand. In a 2020 interview with Rising Ballers, he named Hudson-Odoi as one of the best players he had come up against, alongside Ansu Fati and Brian Brobbey.

The forward even went on loan to Bayer Leverkusen to try and work his way back into Chelsea’s plans, but it did not lead to a permanent return.

Wingers beginning to thrive for Chelsea

Since Hudson-Odoi left in 2023, Chelsea have cycled through a number of options on the wings without really settling on a consistent group.

Now, though, they are finally seeing some stability and productivity from those positions. Estevao Willian and Pedro Neto are locked in a good contest for the starting role on the right, with both players making regular contributions.

On the left, Jamie Gittens is still working to find his rhythm at Stamford Bridge, while Alejandro Garnacho has started to settle in after an unpopular summer move from Manchester United.
