It was a special day for Chelsea fans on Saturday, where they got to see something they always enjoy.
Another talented academy kid got his first goal in professional football – it’s always special to see a player celebrating such a special moment in their life.
Josh Acheampong was mobbed by his teammates at the corner flag after heading his Chelsea’s opening goal against Nottingham Forest. Notably delighted in the group of players hugging the young defender was fellow academy graduate Reece James.
James spoke to the Sun at full time and explained a little about how he had been helping his protege:
“I’m delighted for him. He’s an amazing player. But when you’re so young, the best way of learning is playing on a regular basis. I’ve tried to help him as much as I can, and in the times he’s played, everyone has seen what he can do and how well he can play,” James said.
He also had a word for people behind the scenes who were helping him stay fit for his best period in years:
“Many people behind the scenes are helping me; they know who they are. I have someone at the club that I work closely with; he’s been a big part of keeping me on the pitch,” the England international said.
“I’m on the way to getting back to where I was. It’s taken a long time, but I’m feeling stronger. playing regularly again makes me happy.”
Acheampong was a major target in the summer for Borussia Dortmund, but according to Fabrizio Romano Chelsea said no.
Another young starlet from the Blues’ win over Nottingham Forest was Marc Guiu, who changed the game tactically as well as contributing to the first two goals. He created the space for Acheampong to head home with a run to the near post. This comes on the back of a meeting with Enzo Maresca that he had.
