The One Factor Could Decide Antony’s Departure from Manchester United

Manchester United may be preparing to cut ties with one of their most high-profile signings, as Real Betis are confident of signing Antony permanently, according to Diario Sport, via Simply Utd. The Spanish outlet reports that while the Andalusian club is optimistic, the deal hinges on a key financial condition: Antony must accept a major wage reduction to stay in Seville next season.

The 25-year-old Brazilian winger has impressed since joining Betis on loan in January, and his resurgence has caught attention across Europe. But for United, the question now is whether they’re ready to cut losses on a player they signed for €95 million from Ajax just two years ago.

From Old Trafford Outcast to Betis Star

Antony’s loan spell has been quietly brilliant. After a turbulent final few months at Manchester United, where his form dipped and his role became uncertain, the move to Spain offered a fresh start. He has since scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists, helping Betis secure European qualification and reach the UEFA Conference League final.

His pace, dribbling, and direct play have reinvigorated Betis’s attack under Manuel Pellegrini, and Diario Sport claim the manager has made Antony a summer priority.

Wage Cut the Deciding Factor

The key complication is Antony’s salary. At Manchester United, he earns £200,000 per week, a figure that is unsustainable for Betis. Diario Sport report that Betis will push for a permanent deal, but only if Antony accepts a 30 percent wage cut, bringing his salary closer to their top earners. That means the player himself will need to take a proactive step to leave Old Trafford for good.

Antony is believed to be open to the idea, prioritizing footballing consistency over wages, but nothing has yet been agreed.

What Manchester United Want

United, meanwhile, are considering their options. According to the same report, they are not against selling Antony if a suitable offer arrives. The club would ideally want around €40 to €45 million, and while Betis are unlikely to pay that fee outright, a structured deal or loan with obligation could be on the table.

This also fits with United’s broader summer plans under Erik ten Hag. The club is aiming to reshape its attack, and selling Antony would free up both wages and a squad spot. Players like Michael Olise, Nico Williams, and even João Neves have all been monitored.

Timing and Competition

Betis are not alone. Diario Sport note that clubs in Italy, including newly promoted Como, have also shown interest. However, Antony reportedly favors staying with Betis, where he has finally rediscovered his form. Betis will make their move after the Conference League final, hoping United are ready to listen.

If United accept a lower fee and Antony agrees to the wage cut, a deal could move quickly.
