'The position' – Ben Jacobs delivers good news on Xabi Alonso Chelsea situation

Journalist Ben Jacobs has put out some pretty positive news around a possible Xabi Alonso to Chelsea move.

Although the news is not directly talking about Chelsea, at this point at least, what Jacobs is reporting is only going to help Chelsea’s attempts to land Alonso as their new head coach this summer after sacking Liam Rosenior a few weeks back now.

Alonso is heavily linked with Chelsea right now, with all the major outlets in agreement that he is their main target that they want to bring in, and the club have been speaking with him about the role recently.

We are waiting on more updates on that situation directly soon, but one concern is that Alonso is a former Liverpool player, and many believe he would love to manage there – this could throw a spanner in the works for Chelsea IF Liverpool sacked Arne Slot. But it doesn’t look like they will…

Slot being backed

GMS senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs said: “I don’t even think this narrative of Liverpool reassessing in the summer necessarily has that much credence regarding Arne Slot’s future.

“The position, speaking to Liverpool sources, is clear and has been for quite some time, that Liverpool and FSG back Arne Slot and they’ve got a big summer ahead, and this idea that they’re going to have a review at the end of the season and may U-turn on that position is downplayed by sources.

“What now can change between today and the end of the season? Liverpool are highly likely to get Champions League football, that’s the best they can do, and it’s been clear for quite some time, so any review doesn’t need to wait until the summer. There’s ongoing dialogue and feedback, and Arne Slot is part of the summer planning, and it’ll be a huge U-turn, an unexpected situation, if FSG and Liverpool’s leadership team suddenly get to the summer and go, now the season’s ended, we’ve got a different perspective.”

Como’s Jacobo Ramon is being linked with a number of top clubs, and Chelsea offer him a chance to start pretty quickly, putting them ahead of other possible options.

Mathis Eboue is a name we’re going to hear more and more about as he gets closer to the first team at Chelsea. And there is some Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo chatter.
