Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has managed to do the unthinkable after ending the club’s long-standing trophy drought. The Lilywhites have won the Europa League against all odds after beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final last week. Winning the competition has also ensured Champions League qualification for next season.
The Premier League season also came to an end on Sunday and Spurs fans would be relieved as they can now look towards the future. There was a party mood all around the stadium as Ange’s men took on Brighton in the last game of the season. The Lilywhites got beat 1-4, but not a single fan was worried about the result as the club celebrated the Europa League success.
The fans were loud and proud while backing Big Ange during the game. After enduring a disastrous Premier League campaign, there have been some doubts over the Australian’s future at N17. The North London club finished the season 17th in the league table, but Champions League football for next season has given the fans something to look forward to.
Last summer, Tottenham focused on recruiting young players to build the foundations of the squad. However, the Lilywhites cannot do the same this season as they have qualified for Champions League football for next season. The North London club must bring in players that have the experience of playing at the highest level as Spurs will look to build on the Europa League success moving forward.
Even Ange Postecoglou believes that Tottenham must bring in experienced players if they want to compete for titles next year. Speaking in his post-match presser (as transcribed by Football.london), Big Ange said,
“If we do some good business in the transfer market, obviously brings some experience in, I’m not talking about age, I’m talking about players who have played at this level and can help the team, then I’ve got no doubt we can make the impact we want.”
The Spurs manager added,
“So yeah, I think every club that gets into the Champions League sees it as an opportunity to strengthen with experience is the right word, but players who have played at that level, who are going to be comfortable at that level, not players who are stepping up to that level. That’s the difference.”
Ange Postecoglou suggested that Tottenham need to sign some experienced players that have played at the highest level as the club prepares for Champions League football next season. The Spurs manager also insisted that every club in the Champions League looks to bring in some experienced players, so the Lilywhites must focus on that as well and sign players that would be comfortable playing at a high level.
Daniel Levy has already started targeting a few players as Spurs look to strengthen their squad depth. Due to the poor Premier League campaign, the Lilywhites will be forced to adopt the ‘sell-to-buy’ policy. So, Levy must find a way to cash in on underperforming players if the North London club wants to bring in new signings in the summer. Fans will hope that the Spurs chairman is proactive in the summer and does not get complacent.
