Jamie Carragher sat down to look at the wreckage of Chelsea’s season last night on Sky Sports, and points to one big mistake.

Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher were on Sky Sports last night talking about Chelsea’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, and where things had gone so wrong for the Blues this season.

Everyone knows they want a “top manager” to come in this summer and fix things. But according to Carragher, they had one as recently as January and let him go.

Carragher says Chelsea should have given more power to impressive Maresca

“They had that manager in Maresca. I was really impressed with the work that Maresca did. Then there was a clash of personalities,” Carragher said.

“But once you get a manager that starts winning trophies, understandably he wants more power. That’s normal, that’s what top managers. They’re going to have to deal with that in the future if they do get a top manager or someone successful – they missed out on Maresca.”

It does seem like an inevitability that any coach will demand more power if they succeed. It’s not a winning strategy to sack your managers when they have success.

“No chance… for that type of expenditure you should be challenging for the league… they’re a big club.”

Andoni Iraola has been favourite to become Chelsea manager for some time, but there is apparently one major doubt about him.

Calum McFarlane said that the change that brought Levi Colwill on against Nottingham Forest wasn’t “planned” in the traditional sense.
