Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has remained tight-lipped when addressing the future of skipper Son Heung-min

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to make adjustments to their Europa League-winning squad since Thomas Frank was appointed as their new head coach in June, leading to the additions of Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus, as well as the permanent capture of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

Thomas Frank took in charge of his first Spurs game against Reading last weekend. It was the club’s first pre-season fixture and the Dane’s side won it comfortably 2-0, thanks to goals from Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic.

Before the friendly fixture against Reading, Frank had addressed a host of subjects in his presser- including the futures of certain Spurs players. It was not surprising that the media asked him about the long-serving Son Heung-min and his future at the club.

Son Heung-min, who led Tottenham to Europa League glory back in May, his first silverware in 10 long years at the club, has just 12 months remaining on his contract ( Transfermarkt). The 33-year-old’s future has been under constant speculation since the turn of the year, with the forward heavily linked with moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia. MLS side Los Angeles FC have also recently shown an interest, but he has no interest in moving to America this year.

Thomas Frank coy on Son Heung-min’s future at Tottenham

Addressing the media during his first press conference since replacing Ange Postecoglou at the helm, Frank remain coy over Son’s future.

“If a player has been at a club a long time, then there will always be a decision for the club to take,” Frank was quoted by The Standard.

Son endured a frustrating 2024/25 campaign and managed 16 goal contributions in 30 Premier League games. It was unusual given the high standards the forward has set in the Premier League over the years. He also did suffer from injury problems, and while the South Korean regained his fitness in time for the Europa League final, Ange started Richarlison on the left flank and only brought his captain off the bench.

This is the last real opportunity for Spurs to get a decent fee for veteran star, who is on a £190,000 per week contract. Frank has reportedly greenlighted the South Asian ace’s exit, but still if he decides to remain at the club and see out the last 12 months on his contract, it is very likely Son will have to accept being a squad rotation player under the Danish boss next season with the club boasting plenty of young and dynamic wide operators now.

Tottenham are touring Asia for pre-season after their friendly against Luton Town on Saturday and do not return until August 8, so an exit for Son is viewed as unlikely before then, given his demigod like status in the continent.
